How to stop your staff from moving on
It can sometimes be a challenge to keep clients, but if your attention is focused more so on employee turnover instead, then you have a problem.
As an employer you need to see your team members as your biggest asset. If you want to have the best vets and nurses there are, then it’s time to make decisions regarding what you, your clients, patients and existing team need.
If you are an owner then you need to look at your practice managers. Think about holding them accountable and let them know that high turnover is no longer an option.
To keep the best staff then you need to invest money and time into training.
Your managers should be committed to your goals and not have a “lax” approach. They need to keep employees engaged, motivated and challenged. Your staff should be telling their fellow vet/nurse friends that they work in “the best practice”.
If they aren’t doing this then you need to consider what you’re doing wrong.
If you want to know what your employees really want, then you need to ask them directly. It’s that simple!
Wages in the veterinary industry are pretty standard but the following tips can set you apart from other clinics and prevent that door from swinging yet again.
Time off - offer a better rota. For example every second weekend off or only one Saturday on a month
Benefits - A day in lieu for birthdays or a gift voucher for Christmas
Training Program - Having a formal training program can make the settling in period smooth and more efficient.
CPD Initiatives
Team Atmosphere - Understanding the importance of teamwork, and encouraging your employees to solve problems, offer feedback and make suggestions. A happy team equals happier customers.
Bonding activities - Offering your team a opportunity to bond outside of the clinic/hospital is important for staff morale and helps maintain a positive environment inside the practice.
Set goals and give rewards - Setting internal goals and providing rewards when these are met is a active way to keep your staff alert. For example, if you run a health plan scheme, set a monthly sign up target. When the targets are met provide rewards for achievements. Incentives such as coffee mornings or a hamper for who had the most sales can motivate staff to reach goals and it’s fun!
