The Irish Blue Cross is a long-established animal welfare charity. Our mission is to provide affordable veterinary care to eligible owners, promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership, and help alleviate the suffering of animals.

You’ll be joining a friendly, supportive team of vets, nurses and support staff at our Inchicore Clinic. We care about providing a high standard of veterinary care, but also about looking after each other and creating a good place to work.

The Role

We’re looking for Casual Hours Veterinary Nurses to join our nursing team in Inchicore and provide additional clinical cover when needed.

These are flexible, ad-hoc roles with no fixed or guaranteed weekly hours and no minimum commitment. We’re hoping to build a group of experienced RVNs who can help cover annual leave, sickness and other gaps in our nursing rota.

We’ll get an idea of your general availability and the types of shifts that might suit you. When we have dates available, we’ll send them out to the casual nursing team and you can let us know if you’re interested. There’s no expectation that you’ll be available every time we’re looking for cover.

This could suit you if you already work part-time, do some locum work, are returning to clinical practice, or would simply like to pick up occasional additional shifts without committing to a regular rota.

Additional Shifts Available this Autumn

From 27 October to 12 December, we expect to have around 3–4 days per week available.

You don’t need to be available for all, or any, of this period to join our casual team. However, if you’re looking for some additional work during that time and would like to take on some or all of these shifts, we’d be very happy to hear from you also.

What You'll Be Doing

Inchicore is a busy clinic with a varied caseload, and you’ll be working alongside an experienced and supportive veterinary team.

Your work may include:

• Nurse clinics, including surgical admissions and discharges, post-operative checks and routine monitoring of medical patients.
• Surgical nursing, including pre-anaesthetic checks, blood sampling, cannula placement, drug preparation and administration, anaesthesia monitoring and recovery.
• Clinical nursing including microchipping, dentals and wound care.
• In-patient care, including patient monitoring, fluid therapy and medication administration.
• Triage and assisting with emergency walk-in cases when required.
• Maintaining accurate patient records and providing clear clinical handovers.
• Providing compassionate, professional support and clear communication to our clients.
• Helping maintain high standards of hygiene, stock control, equipment care and general clinic organisation.
• Assisting with evening and Saturday lock-up when required.

It’s a busy environment, we see a lot of patients and the work is rewarding. You’ll be helping us provide high-quality veterinary care to pets whose owners may otherwise struggle to access it.

About You

You’re a qualified veterinary nurse who is comfortable working in a busy clinical environment and takes pride in providing a high standard of patient care.

You’ll be caring, reliable and professional, with good clinical, organisational and communication skills. You’ll be able to settle into the team, use your initiative and work flexibly as part of the team.

You don’t need to be available every week. What matters to us is that when you do take a shift, we can rely on you to work well with your colleagues and provide the standard of care our patients and clients deserve.

You’ll also understand that our work is as much about people as it is about their pets. Kindness, patience and treating everyone who comes through our doors with respect are important parts of how we work.

Applicants must already have the legal right to work in Ireland. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide employment permit or visa sponsorship for these casual roles.
