Reports to: Hospital Manager and Head Nurse
Schedule: Every other weekend- 12 hour shifts (SAT & SUN)
Salary: up to €45,000 pro rata/ €21 per hour
About the Role
- Provide high-quality nursing care to hospitalised ECC patients, ensuring their comfort, safety, and wellbeing throughout their stay
- Perform regular patient assessments, including monitoring vital signs, pain scores, neurological status, fluid balance, and overall clinical progress
- Administer medications, intravenous fluids, blood products, and nutritional support in accordance with treatment plans
- Carry out nursing procedures such as IV catheter care, urinary catheter management, wound care, bandage changes, and sample collection
- Assist veterinarians with patient rounds, diagnostics, procedures, and treatment plans for hospitalised cases
- Monitor and manage patients receiving intensive therapies, including oxygen supplementation, infusion pumps, feeding tubes, and post-operative care
- Maintain accurate treatment sheets, inpatient records, monitoring charts, and nursing notes, ensuring clear communication between teams
- Provide compassionate updates to pet owners regarding their pet’s progress, treatment plans, and ongoing care requirements
- Support patient admissions and discharges, including preparing discharge medications and client care instructions
- Maintain high standards of infection prevention, biosecurity, cleanliness, and patient hygiene within the hospital wards
- Collaborate closely with the ECC, referral, and specialist teams to ensure seamless continuity of care for all inpatients
- Assist in mentoring junior nurses and animal care assistants, promoting best practice in inpatient and critical care nursing
- Monitor ward supplies, equipment, and consumables, ensuring all inpatient care resources are readily available
About You
- Qualified and VCI registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)
- 3+ years’ experience as a qualified RVN in small animal practice
- Further qualification specific to ECC is desirable
- Previous experience working in a busy emergency hospital and/or in a referral hospital is desirable
- This role demands strong clinical skills, resilience, and compassion to deliver high-quality care to patients in urgent need
- Highly motivated, hard-working, and a team player
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Passionate about delivering gold-standard patient and client care
