Veterinary Surgeon - 1 Year Fixed Term Contract

Dublin, Ireland Full Time
Compensation: €45,000 to €650,000 Annually

Use Your Veterinary Skills to Make a Real Difference to Pets and People in Dublin

About Us

The Irish Blue Cross is a long-established Dublin-based animal welfare charity. Our mission is to provide affordable veterinary care to eligible owners, promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership, and alleviate the suffering of animals.

You'll be joining a close-knit and supportive team of vets, nurses and support staff, all committed to delivering practical, contextualised veterinary care while supporting one another's wellbeing and professional development.

The Role

We are seeking a Veterinary Surgeon to join our Inchicore Clinic on a one-year fixed-term contract. Full-time is preferred, although part-time applications will be considered.

Please note: We are unable to offer employment permit or visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must have the right to work in Ireland at the time of application.

This is an opportunity to work in a rewarding charity environment where every day brings variety and purpose. Working within a contextualised care model, you'll use your clinical judgement to develop practical treatment plans that improve animal welfare while recognising the individual circumstances of each client.

You'll manage a varied caseload of consultations, surgery, dentistry and diagnostic imaging, working alongside an experienced team of veterinary nurses, animal care assistants and receptionists to provide veterinary care that makes a meaningful difference to pets and the people who care for them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical and surgical care using sound clinical judgement within a contextualised care framework.
  • Carry out consultations, routine surgery, dentistry and diagnostic procedures, including radiography and ultrasound.
  • Use sound clinical judgement to develop practical treatment plans that make the greatest possible difference to the pets and people the charity serves.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients, supporting informed decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical records and provide effective case handovers.
  • Work collaboratively with veterinary nurses, reception staff and colleagues to ensure the smooth running of the clinic.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and continuous improvement within the service.
  • Participate in continuing professional development and mandatory training.
  • Promote and follow the Charity's clinical, health and safety and organisational policies.

About You

You are a veterinary surgeon who enjoys solving clinical challenges, communicating openly with clients and using sound clinical judgement to provide practical, contextualised care.

You enjoy working as part of a supportive team while also being confident managing your own caseload. You recognise that good veterinary care is about more than clinical knowledge alone - it also requires empathy, clear communication and the ability to develop practical treatment plans that deliver meaningful benefits for patients and their owners.

Ideally, you will have:

  • A veterinary degree recognised by the Veterinary Council of Ireland.
  • Current registration with the Veterinary Council of Ireland.
  • Current eligibility to work in Ireland without the need for employment permit or visa sponsorship.
  • Experience in small animal practice.
  • Confidence in consulting, routine surgery, imaging and dentistry.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • The ability to prioritise a varied caseload in a busy clinical environment.
  • An interest in practising contextualised veterinary care that aims to provide the greatest benefit for the largest number of pets and their owners.
  • A commitment to professionalism, teamwork and continuous learning.

What We Offer

  • One-year fixed-term contract (full-time preferred, part-time considered).
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • Four weeks' annual leave (plus discretionary company days).
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Enhanced sick pay.
  • Bike to Work scheme.
  • Option to join Hospital Saturday fund.
  • Option to join The Irish Blue Cross Staff Pension Scheme.
  • A supportive clinical team committed to collaboration, professional development and continually improving patient care.
